Machine Learning in Systems Biology

maggio 29, 2007

LOCALE: Evry, France
DATE: 24-25 September 2007

The aim of this workshop is to contribute to the cross-fertilization between the research in machine learning methods and their applications to complex biological and medical questions by bringing together method developers and experimentalists. We encourage submissions bringing forward methods for discovering complex structures (e.g. interaction networks, molecule structures) and methods supporting genome-wide data analysis.

SUBMISSIONS:
We invite to submit an extended abstract of maximum five pages, formatted according to the “Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science” style. Papers should be submitted online via the Easychair submission system at http://www.easychair.org/MLSB07/. The deadline for submissions is June 30. The accepted submissions will be edited in the proceedings of the workshop.

IMPORTANT DATES:
June 30: deadline for submissions
July 17: response to authors
August 20: camera-ready papers (extended abstracts)
September 24-25: workshop

Il futuro secondo Intel

maggio 19, 2007

Ecco un video in cui Intel ha voluto sintetizzare la sua visione del futuro prossimo venturo. Sembra qualcosa di molto futuristico ma probabilmente è meno lontano di quanto pensiamo.

[Harmony Search] R.I.P. Prof. Loganathan

maggio 18, 2007

ABREN Workshop 2 June 2007

maggio 12, 2007

Bioinformatics is one of the most rapidly growing interdisciplinary fields of science, and expected to make a huge contribution not only to the advancement of basic biological science but also to biotechnology and medicine in the future. However, because of its rapid growth, the developments of infrastructure and education fell behind. Also, this is the field that needs interaction of people with different academic backgrounds and cooperation among them. However, the lack of supporting systems to facilitate such cooperation is one of the factors to hinder the sound development of this field.

The proposed international project is aimed at forming Asian Bioinformatics Research and Education Network (ABREN) as a forum among Asian countries to facilitate collaborative research and education in bioinformatics. Such collaborative project will promote new fields of research and more comprehensive education, which are difficult to establish in individual institutions. Asia is one of the most rapidly growing regions in the world. Biotechnology and IT are among the most promising areas contributing to the future economy in the region. We hope that ABREN will contribute to the development of Asian economy as well as basic science.

The second virtual training workshop will be open from June 20 to July 20, 2007. The registration will start from May 15, till June 15, 2007.

Creare uno splash screen in Java

maggio 8, 2007

Ecco una classe per la creazione di uno splash screen.

import java.awt.*;
import javax.swing.*;

public class SplashScreen extends JWindow {

private int duration;

public SplashScreen(int d) {
duration = d;
}

// A simple little method to show a title screen in the center
// of the screen for the amount of time given in the constructor
public void showSplash() {

JPanel content = (JPanel)getContentPane();
content.setBackground(Color.white);

// Set the window's bounds, centering the window
int width = 450;
int height =115;
Dimension screen = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getScreenSize();
int x = (screen.width-width)/2;
int y = (screen.height-height)/2;
setBounds(x,y,width,height);

// Build the splash screen
JLabel label = new JLabel(new ImageIcon("java-tip.gif"));
JLabel copyrt = new JLabel
("Copyright 2002, O'Reilly & Associates", JLabel.CENTER);
copyrt.setFont(new Font("Sans-Serif", Font.BOLD, 12));
content.add(label, BorderLayout.CENTER);
content.add(copyrt, BorderLayout.SOUTH);
Color oraRed = new Color(156, 20, 20, 255);
content.setBorder(BorderFactory.createLineBorder(oraRed, 10));

// Display it
setVisible(true);

// Wait a little while, maybe while loading resources
try { Thread.sleep(duration); } catch (Exception e) {}

setVisible(false);

}

public void showSplashAndExit() {

showSplash();
System.exit(0);

}

public static void main(String[] args) {

// Throw a nice little title page up on the screen first
SplashScreen splash = new SplashScreen(10000);

// Normally, we'd call splash.showSplash() and get on
// with the program. But, since this is only a test...
splash.showSplashAndExit();

}
}

Everything

maggio 8, 2007

You’re a falling star, You’re the get away car.
You’re the line in the sand when I go too far.
You’re the swimming pool, on an August day.
And You’re the perfect thing to see.

And you play your card, but it’s kinda cute.
Ah, When you smile at me you know exactly what you do.
Baby don’t pretend, that you don’t know it’s true.
Cause you can see it when I look at you.
